In 2000 Taekwondo became an Olympic sport governed by the WTF,  World Taekwondo Federation and the ITF, International Taekwondo Federation. Under WTF rules, sparring is 3, 3 minute rounds of full contact fighting. Younger competitors fight 2 rounds, all with a 30 second rest between rounds.

Points are awarded based on power and accuracy. Fighters are awarded 1 point for punches or kicks to the chest gear or Hogu and  2 points for kicks to the head. Punches to the head or face are not allowed. If a fighter is knocked down and the referee counts, they are awarded an additional point.

At the end of the bout, the competitor with the most points wins. There is a term called "7-pointed", which means that during the bout, if a fight gains a 7 point lead over the other, they are immediately declared the winner. A fight can also end if one fighter reaches 12 points. In the event of a tie, a "sudden death" round decides the winner.

There are lots of ways to loose points. A warning, referred to as "Kyong go" and "Gam geon", which is an actual 1 point deduction. 2 Kyong go gets a Gam geon. Some examples are: Grabbing the opponent, Holding the opponent , Pushing the opponent, Touching the opponent with the trunk, Intentionally crossing the Alert Line, Evading by turning the back to the opponent, Intentionally falling down, Pretending injury, Butting or attacking with the knee, Intentionally attacking the groin, Intentionally stamping or kicking any part of the leg or foot, Hitting the opponent’s face with hands or fist, Gesturing to indicate scoring or deduction on the part of the contestant or the coach, Uttering undesirable remarks or any misconduct on the part of the contestant or the coach, Leaving the designated mark on the part of the coach during match. I think you get the idea.
