In 2000 Taekwondo became an Olympic sport governed by the WTF, World Taekwondo Federation and the ITF, International Taekwondo Federation. Under WTF rules, sparring is 3, 3 minute rounds of full contact fighting. Younger competitors fight 2 rounds, all with a 30 second rest between rounds.
Points are awarded based on power and accuracy. Fighters are awarded 1 point for punches or kicks to the chest gear or Hogu and 2 points for kicks to the head. Punches to the head or face are not allowed. If a fighter is knocked down and the referee counts, they are awarded an additional point.
At the end of the bout, the competitor with the most points wins. There is a term called "7-pointed", which means that during the bout, if a fight gains a 7 point lead over the other, they are immediately declared the winner. A fight can also end if one fighter reaches 12 points. In the event of a tie, a "sudden death" round decides the winner.

There are lots of ways
to loose points. A warning, referred to as "Kyong go" and "Gam geon",
which is an actual 1 point deduction. 2 Kyong go gets a Gam geon.
